Remembrance Day and This Month

Thank you for all of your hardwork in our “My Immortal” Remembrance Day Skit. As you may have heard, it made quite the impression on those who watched it.

Tomorrow is Photo ReTake Day. If you would like retakes, they will occur tomorrow!

Tomorrow is also our Patterning Quiz, you should be able to find patterns and use algebraic expressions to solve them!

In Language, we are finishing up our short stories unit. If you have not yet submitted your “Most Dangerous Game” epilogue, it is now PAST DUE. On Monday, we will begin our group novel study on “Unwind” by Neal Shusterman and practising our letter writing skills as well.

Remember–friday is a PA Day, if you/your parents have scheduled a student led/parent conference, I will send home slips tomorrow as a reminder!

We’re back!

This is great! Finally, we are back on track with our class blog! There will be regular updates as we progress through the year.

First of, I would like all students to sign up for our google classroom. The code to enter our class is

vy0b88t. There you will find any handouts, notes or homework you may have missed. It is also a great discussion board, but if you are just coming on to chat, please use your own accounts and devices for that, this will be for school chats only. Thank you.

A reminder that gym clothes are needed now that we are into regular indoor gym, not only is it for your comfort, but your safety as well! It is hard to run and jump in jeans!

Picture retake day is next thursday, November 12th.

Welcome to a new year of Grade 7/8 at WH Day!

Welcome back Bolts! I hope you all had an enjoyable summer. Before we get going, I’d like to introduce myself. My name is Tracy Ripley and this is my first year here at WH Day. In my first few days it has been clear to me what a wonderful school and community this is. πŸ™‚

I am sure this is going to be a great year for all of us, we have already had a few chuckles this week as we get to know each other.

There will be updates on this blog regularly, so please check back often.
We are starting to begin our first unit of Math–Number Sense and Numeration
Grade 7’s will be representing, comparing and ordering numbers (multiples and factors, square roots and squares, place value to the hundredths and using fractions, decimals and percentages)
Grade 8’s will be representing, comparing and ordering equivalent representations of numbers (Exponents, powers of ten, factors and multiples, ordering positive and negative fractions and decimals to the thousandths, and translating between fractions, decimals and percentages).

Again this year we will be having rotary. We will start with History until the 5th of October with me. The next 5 weeks, you will have Science with Mr. Beaton (the 6/7 teacher), and then 5 weeks of the Arts with Mrs. MacNeice.

Please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns via email (or call the school) and I will get back to you as quickly as possible.

Cheers,
Mrs. R πŸ™‚

June Post!

Well, we are Β made it to June! The grad trip to Ottawa was fantastic, I could not have asked for a better group to travel with….lots of memories were made on this trip that we will keep with us for a lifetime!

Graduation is now 3 weeks away, today a letter went home outlining upcoming graduation information. I am NOT artistic, so any assistance with graduation decorations will be greatly appreciated. Please feel free to email me at school : tripley@scdsb.on.ca and I will get back to you!

May post #2!

Woohoo! 2 posts this month….I guess things are really starting to slow down (ha ha ha). Just a reminder, Ottawa trip forms are due tomorrow…We need them before we leave (at 7:15am wednesday!). No form, no trip!

Thank you to everyone for their perseverance this month, there’s been a lot going on, and we are all in summer mode, but we push on, the end is near!

PLEASE remember to email, or bring in, your baby photos for the graduation video, I have started and would like to get it well on it’s way! Also pics from the year would be helpful too…

The grad theme is VINTAGE HOLLYWOOD, we are looking for set designers and artists to help with making your grad extra-special, if you can help, or know someone who can, please let me know!

All things May!

It’s true! Spring is here! Sorry it has taken so long to post–we’ve been having a great time in Grade 8 and keeping up with the blog didn’t hit my radar!
Here is what has been going on this month:

We are finishing up our Book Talks. Students used their independent reading time to read a book of their choice, they are going to persaude us to read it with their presentation and visual aid next week. Then we will head into our last unit on poetry/folklore!

In Math, we just finished our important unit on Algebra, it was nice to have a high school teacher come in from BDHS to teach us “the Highschool” way. Now we are getting ready for our Probability carnival on the 19th. Work on your carnival games at home so you are ready to go on the 19th!

In Science, we finished our unit on Fluids, and still start Systems in Action soon.

Thank you to everyone who submitted their final payments for the Ottawa trip, it is coming soon and we are all looking forward to going to Canada’s capital! We have slowly started planning for grad too: THeme to be announced next week!

REMEMBER, rugby team plays Monday in the Championship tournament–bring lots of water to hydrate! Track and Field is tuesday….so Ditto with the water!

Thanks for a great year so far–let’s finish of May in the very best way (ha, catch that? Poetry…..)

Updating April

Well, April is here and spring is in the air!

We have just finsihed up our Number Sense math unit on Fractions, Percentages and Integers. We are heading into Algebra where you will be learning the following criteria:

8m59: describe different ways in which algebra can be used in real-life situations
8m61: translate statements describing mathematical relationships into algebraic expressions and equations
8m62: evaluate algebraic expressions with up to three terms, by substituting fractions, decimals, and integers for the variables
8m64: solve and verify linear equations involving a one-variable term and having solutions that are integers, by using inspection, guess and check, and a β€œbalance” model

We have a history test next Thursday. Review sheets will be ready on Friday. We will start our last Geography unit this month: Global Inequalities.

Thank you to everyone who helped make our Anti-Bullying Day a real success, Thank you for supporting our stance against bullying and reminding others to STAND UP, STEP IN and SPEAK OUT! You can make a difference!

Ummm…so I think I missed March!

In like a lion and….out like a lion? Brrrrr, the last day of March has been C O L D! But of course, as usual, we have been a busy bunch! We are almost finished our Number Sense and Numeration Unit in math, next month, we will be working on INTEGERS before heading into our last Patterning and Algebra unit.

We will begin our persausive writing unit (Debates), in April as well. I know we will all do well with this unit as we are excellent negotiators! By the end of April, we will have finished our final history unit as well!

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the success of our Black Light Dance fundraiser! It was a success!

February–where did it go??

It’s hard to believe that February came and went so quickly and I did not post on the blog once! My apologies!

Today you registered for High School at Banting, make sure to take home your course selection sheets!

We are now well on our way into term 2! We have started our LAST history unit, talking about the changes in Canada from 1889-1911, who the changes affected and what chagnes there were!

In Science, we are learing about Fluids. We will be talking about vocabulary such as: bouyancy and viscosity as well as discussioning Particle Theory.

We are working on Number Sense and Numeration in Math. We are solving problems using percents. We can now find sales tax, and calculate increases and decreases in prices πŸ™‚

In Language, we have just finished our novel study on The Outsiders, by S. E. Hinton. We will be writing CASI in March as well as working on persausive writing for debates.

Our Human Growth and Development unit will begin in March as well as our Dance unit in Phys. Ed.

So as you can see, there is a Β lot going on in Grade 8! So “Laisser les bons temps rouler!” Let the good times roll.
